Coffee Klatch, where the current US Barista Champion Heather Perry pulls shots, is giving away free drinks during the Starbucks media blitz “retraining” sessions on Feb 26. Favorite quote: “While they practice pushing buttons, their customers can come to Coffee Klatch and learn how coffee is really supposed to taste.”Thanks, Consumerist!

You know, I was just thinking something similar to this today. If I wanted to know what coffee is supposed to taste like, where in Nashville should I go? Bongo Java? Fido? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not tossing that Starbuks giftcard. But, you know, if I wanted to know about what I’m missing.
Yep. Personally, I’m a fan of both Bongo and Portland Brew. Actually, Portland delivers some of the best shots and lattes, particularly the one on Murphy. Geoff Collins probably has a bit more informed tastes, and should chime in (hint, hint).
OK, I’ll chime away. Since I’ve stopped pulling shots, there isn’t a place in Nashville that has great coffee…
Seriously, Portland Brew is the chain I trust most. I’ve had bad espresso in every shop in town, and I’ve had great shots in almost every shop in town. (Starbucks being the exception) I know the main trainer at Portland, Keith (JJ’s alum), and they are investing a bit of money in a roasting works/central office/ training facility somewhere on the east side. That says a lot. I’m not knocking Bongo at all, BTW. I’ve had a lot of good drinks there too. If you need a drive-thru, go to Sam and Zoe’s.
